Well, if that’s you, the U.S Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is glad to announce that the Gilman International Scholarship Program is ongoing.

The scholarship is open to all undergraduate U.S citizens who wish to study abroad on a transfer program.

Hence, if you are studying a two or four years course in one of the accredited institutions, you are eligible Gilman Scholarship.

The mission of the  Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) for offering this scholarship is to further strengthen the international relationships between the United state with other countries through education and cultural exchange.

What you Need to Know About Gilman Scholarship Program 

If you are asking what is the Gilman scholarship? The simple answer will be, it is an international scholarship program that gives opportunities to students with financial needs to study or intern abroad.

The program was created in 2001 and has since then been empowering students with critical skills needed for national security and nation-building.

Level/Field of study:

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to undergraduate students. You are encouraged to languages especially critical languages, those deemed to be important to national security.

Eligible Countries:

The scholarship is open to all U.S citizens, especially the underrepresented groups in the education board like;

first-generation college students, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students attending HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) or other minority-serving institutions, students attending community colleges, and students coming from U.S. states with less study abroad participation.

The Gilman study abroad scholarship as the name suggests is a study abroad program which means, it is to be taken in other countries that will be listed on the official website.

The program awards Over 3,600 scholarships of up to $5,000 for this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study or intern abroad.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must make you meet the Gilman scholarship requirements and also prepare the following documents before the Gilman scholarship deadline.

How To Apply For Gilman scholarship Program

The application for the Gilman scholarship is done online via the Gilman scholarship official portal. Though you can either apply for the scholarship alone or combined it with the Critical Need Language Award.

Gilman scholarship Critical Need Language Award

If you choose to study the Critical Need Language Award, you automatically qualify for an additional scholarship of up to $ 3,000 bringing the total Gilman scholarship award benefits to a total of $ 8,000.

The Critical Need Language Award is competitive and is given to a limited number of Gilman Fellows each year.

Not all students studying these languages ​​receive $ 8,000. Those who receive the Critical Need Language Award and qualify for the Gilman Scholarship will be given the opportunity to take part in the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

This test and the results serve both as a benchmark for the scholarship evaluation and as evidence for the scholarship holder.

To be considered for this award, you must also submit a short essay describing how you plan to improve your basic language skills, what motivates you to do so, and how your language studies relate to your academic and professional goals.

Gilman scholarship deadline

The Gilman Scholarship deadline varies from year to year but the application cycle for programs usually begins between July 15 and October 15.
