The program was created in 2001 and has since then been empowering students with critical skills needed for national security and nation-building.

Level/Field of study:

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to undergraduate students. You are encouraged to languages especially critical languages, those deemed to be important to national security.

Eligible Countries:

The scholarship is open to all U.S citizens, especially the underrepresented groups in the education board like;

first-generation college students, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students attending HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) or other minority-serving institutions, students attending community colleges, and students coming from U.S. states with less study abroad participation.

The program awards Over 3,600 scholarships of up to $5,000 for this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study or intern abroad.

Gilman International Scholarship Program Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must make you meet the Gilman scholarship requirements and also prepare the following documents before the Gilman scholarship deadline.

  • Firstly, you must be a citizen of the United States
  • Secondly, you must be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions)
  • The applicant must also be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship
  • Moreso, the applicant must be in the process of applying to or accepted for, a study abroad or internship program of at least two weeks for community college students and three weeks for students from four-year institutions, in a single country and eligible for credit from the student’s home institution. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement
  • Finally, you must be proposing to study in a country not currently under a Travel Warning issued by the United States Department of State or otherwise determined ineligible for program participation.

  • Current University Transcript: One copy of your official undergraduate transcript from your current college or university.
  • Transfer University Transcript(s): One copy of your undergraduate transcripts (either official or unofficial) from any previous institution you have attended is listed in your application.

How To Apply For Gilman scholarship Program

The application for the Gilman scholarship is done online via the Gilman scholarship official portal. Though you can either apply for the scholarship alone or combined it with the Critical Need Language Award.

Gilman scholarship Critical Need Language Award

If you choose to study the Critical Need Language Award, you automatically qualify for an additional scholarship of up to $ 3,000 bringing the total Gilman scholarship award benefits to a total of $ 8,000.

The Critical Need Language Award is competitive and is given to a limited number of Gilman Fellows each year.

Not all students studying these languages ​​receive $ 8,000. Those who receive the Critical Need Language Award and qualify for the Gilman Scholarship will be given the opportunity to take part in the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

This test and the results serve both as a benchmark for the scholarship evaluation and as evidence for the scholarship holder.

To be considered for this award, you must also submit a short essay describing how you plan to improve your basic language skills, what motivates you to do so, and how your language studies relate to your academic and professional goals.
