How To Apply To Southern Methodist University

Southern Methodist University, which accepts less than half of all applicants, has a selective admissions process.  If your SAT/ACT scores and GPA are in line with the school’s average, you have a good chance of being accepted.

However, SMU has a holistic admissions process that includes factors other than your grades and test scores.  A strong essay and strong letters of recommendation can strengthen your application, as can participation in meaningful extracurricular activities and a rigorous course schedule.

Applicants with particularly compelling stories or accomplishments may still receive serious consideration even if their test scores fall outside SMU’s average range.

Applicants to SMU’s music, theater and dance programs should note that there are audition requirements, and arts students are encouraged to submit a portfolio.

Conclusion

SMU’s admissions process is more selective, and SMU acceptance rate 2023 is 53 percent.  SMU’s early acceptance rate is 55.6 percent.  Half of the students who apply to SMU have an SAT score between 1250 and 1450a and an ACT score between 29 and 33. One quarter of the students who apply to SMU have scores above this range, and one quarter of students have scores below this range.

SMU’s admissions authorities require students to submit their GPA and consider this an important requirement for admission to SMU.  In addition, the authorities consider that a student’s high school ranking, if any, is an important deciding criterion during admission.
